Background
At the May 28 public meeting called by Rec & Park to promote the fee proposal, a vocal majority of about 250 people successfully insisted on an open public discussion and rejected imposition of ANY fee, or enclosure of the Arboretum. City officials acknowledged that public support is not there for this measure, but are still pursuing it with pressure from the Mayor’s office.
We have only a few days before June 17th to communicate to the Supervisors and the Mayor to defeat this measure. The momentum towards defeating any fee - both resident and non-resident and gating is strong and can significantly shift at this stage with your assistance.
Take Action
(see below and please contact us for further specific info).
Budget Meetings
The Supervisors Budget & Finance Committee meetings:
Supervisors Board Chamber (room 250 City Hall) begin at 11 a.m.
Wednesday, June 17 – Rec & Park hearing on Arboretum fee (approx. 2 P.M. agenda)
Wednesday, June 24 – final budget vote to send to the full Board
We have our work cut out for us if we are going to stop Rec & Park from limiting access to, and taking a step toward privatizing, the Arboretum.
The supervisors are responsive to public opinion, and some have already expressed support. We need to provide them with constant reinforcement of the mass of public opposition to ANY entrance fee to the Garden.
Contact the Supervisors and the Mayor
Please call, email and/or write the five supervisors on the Budget and Finance Committee, and urge them to oppose any fees, and any limitation of public access. WE NEED TO COMPLETELY OPPOSE ANY SOLUTION THAT INVOLVES THE INSTALLATION OF GATES AND TICKET KIOSKS.
